A data custodian is responsible for the technical handling of data, including its storage, maintenance, and protection. They ensure that data is accurately entered, properly maintained, and easily retrievable, while also implementing the necessary security measures to safeguard the data against unauthorized access or breaches.
The Data Custodian has 4 main responsibilities/duties regarding the use of data. These are: Planning, Documentation, Execution, and Monitoring. These are applied to Organisational Capabilities, Policies and Standards, Business Processes, and, System Capabilities.
Data Custodians are vitally important in how you data is managed and utilised
The diagram below shows the complexity of this role, and the numerous responsibilities involved.

With the GoPES framework, each task is listed and detailed so that there is almost a playbook approach to this very demanding role. We will be producing an interactive framework that can be run on any platform by the end of the financial year 2025/2026. This will help SMEs who can't afford the time or capital to ensure that their data governance, ethics, privacy, and, security are being successfully managed, and help them on towards ISO standardisation. At this point in time GoPES is a consultative service through AIdentity.uk.
